Section 508 Compliance

Section 508 is the collection of federal guidelines regarding accessibility of electronic media from all government organizations for persons with disabilities. It covers issues such as:

  • Readability of your site by the blind or people with vision problems, including age related vision problems.
  • Accessibility of content by the color blind.
  • Accessibilty of content by people with motor disabilities, i.e. the inability to control a mouse or use a standard keyboard.
  • Even the accessibility of multimedia content by people with photo-sensitive epilepsy, with standards for the frequency of full screen content updates to avoid triggering a seizure.

So why is this important for your website, even if you are not a government agency?

  • It's important, because there is a huge audience of people with disabilities that may not be able to use your site if its not section 508 compliant. If you ignore that audience, you are potentially losing that business.
  • It's the law. If you receive a complaint about your site not being compliant, and you ignore it, you could be held liable.
  • It's good for search engine optimization. Search engines use software similar to the specialized software used by some people with disabilities, like screen readers, and text-only browsers. They don't understand images, sounds, movies, etc. Making your site Section 508 compliant will help the search engines crawl through your site.
